Edo 2020: 35 Political Parties Merge With PDP to Support Obaseki
POLITICS DIGEST – The political battle in Edo state ahead of the gubernatorial election in September is getting stronger as other political parties have merged with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a bid to gain the heart of the state.
According to Channels TV, 35 registered and de-registered political parties partnered with the opposition party to give its governorship candidate, Godwin Obaseki another shot as the governor of Edo state.

The political parties including Social Democratic Party (SDP), Kowa Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), United Progressive Party (UPP), and others pledged their support to the PDP and Obaseki for a second term, the chairman of the SDP, speaking on behalf of the group on Friday, July 17, said that the party’s decision to merge with PDP was to ensure Obaseki gets his second term bid.
Oreruan also appealed to PDP to include SDP in the main campaign organisation for the gubernatorial election. Recall that the embattled governor of Edo state finally defected to the PDP on Friday, June 19, at the party’s secretariat in Benin city, the Edo state capital, a few days after APC disqualified him from its governorship primary. After leaving the APC, Obaseki had been met with leaders of the PDP, a development that fueled speculations about his impending defection to the lead opposition party
In the video shared by the PDP in its official Twitter page, Obaseki said he has become a member of the PDP in Edo state and in Nigeria generally, amid cheers and chanting of “4+4”.
