ECOWAS’ closure of land and air borders with Niger Republic sends a clear message that military coups are not acceptable and undermine the principles of democracy. By implementing this measure, ECOWAS demonstrates its commitment to maintaining constitutional order in member states. These measures aim to limit their access to resources and put pressure on them to restore civilian rule. ECOWAS’ decision to freeze assets of Niger Republic in all ECOWAS Central banks, as well as freezing state enterprises and parastatals’ accounts in commercial banks, aims to prevent the military junta from accessing funds that could be used to consolidate their power or oppress the population. This action demonstrates the determination to hold those responsible for the coup accountable. The suspension of Niger from all financial assistance and transactions with all financial institutions, combined with travel bans on military officials involved in the coup and anyone accepting a position in the military government, imposes diplomatic consequences. These measures isolate the coup plotters and discourage others from supporting or participating in similar actions, emphasizing the importance of respecting democratic processes. ECOWAS’ response to the military coup in Niger Republic showcases the commitment of West African nations to support one another in upholding democratic values. By taking a unified stance against the coup, ECOWAS sends a powerful message to other potential coup makers that such actions will not be tolerated within the region. The ECOWAS resolutions in response to the military coup in Niger Republic are strong and commendable. They reflect a commitment to democratic principles, economic stability, and regional cooperation. While there may be short-term consequences and challenges, it is essential to prioritize the long-term goals of democracy, governance, and peace in the region. ECOWAS’ resolute actions serve as an important reminder that military coups have no place in modern societies and must be met with decisive measures.
