Addressing the Suffering of Nigeria’s Poor Masses
By Saleh Shehu Ashaka:
The Nigerians are facing an unprecedented crisis. The suffering of the poor masses has reached unbearable levels, demanding immediate and decisive action from the government. It is high time for the authorities to roll out substantial palliatives to provide much-needed relief to those who are struggling to make ends meet.
The economic downturn, compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, has pushed millions of Nigerians into a state of extreme poverty. Unemployment rates are skyrocketing, businesses are closing down, and food prices continue to rise. The consequences of this dire situation are devastating, with families unable to afford basic necessities and vulnerable individuals slipping deeper into desperation.
The responsibility lies squarely with the government to address this humanitarian crisis. Prioritizing the well-being of its citizens should be at the forefront of policies and actions. Immediate measures must be taken to provide financial aid, food assistance, and access to essential services to the most vulnerable populations.

Rolling out palliatives is not merely an act of goodwill; it is a moral obligation. The government has a fundamental duty to protect its citizens, especially during times of crisis. Neglecting the suffering of the poor masses not only deepens inequality but also undermines social cohesion and stability.
To ensure the effectiveness of palliative programs, transparency and accountability must be upheld. The distribution of resources should be equitable, reaching those who are most in need and without any form of discrimination or political bias. Additionally, mechanisms should be put in place to monitor the implementation of these programs, ensuring that they are reaching the intended beneficiaries.
In conjunction with immediate relief measures, the government needs to adopt long-term strategies to uplift the poor masses from their current plight. This includes investing in education, healthcare, and vocational training, empowering individuals to build sustainable livelihoods. Furthermore, efforts should be made to create an enabling environment for entrepreneurship and job creation, stimulating economic growth and reducing dependency on external aid.
The suffering of the poor masses in Nigeria cannot be ignored any longer. It is time for the government to step up and fulfill its duty to protect and support the most vulnerable in society. By swiftly rolling out comprehensive palliatives and implementing long-term strategies for sustainable development, Nigeria can begin to heal the wounds inflicted by poverty and create a brighter future for all its citizens.
