Akoko-Edo Leaders Demand End to Marginalization Under Governor Okpebholo

POLITICS DIGEST- The Akoko-Edo Development Association (AEF) has issued a passionate appeal to Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, urging him to address what it describes as the “serial and systematic marginalisation” of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

In a press release issued on Friday, the group highlighted the community’s historical neglect in state governance and called for immediate corrective action to ensure equitable representation and development.

While congratulating Governor Okpebholo on his recent inauguration, the association commended his early appointments but expressed disappointment that Akoko-Edo has yet to secure a prominent position in the new administration.

“We humbly call on the Governor to correct the continued marginalization of Akoko-Edo by giving the people their deserved share of Edo State positions and infrastructure,” said Barr. (Mrs.) Mary Opii, speaking on behalf of the association.

The association underscored the significant electoral support Akoko-Edo provided during the gubernatorial race, noting that the local government delivered the second-largest block vote to ensure Okpebholo’s victory.

“Such an area should not be sidetracked,” the statement emphasized, calling on the Governor to honor his campaign promise of including Akoko-Edo in top levels of state governance.

The AEF also expressed concerns about potential patterns of exclusion, particularly regarding infrastructure distribution and access to the dividends of democracy. They warned that unless urgent steps are taken, Akoko-Edo might once again be relegated to the background—a pattern that has persisted across past administrations.

In its appeal, the association reminded the Governor of the community’s expectations, urging him to break the cycle of neglect. “We sincerely look forward to a situation where Akoko-Edo will not be taken seriously only during electioneering periods,” the statement read.

This call to action comes amid broader conversations about equitable representation in Edo State’s governance. The Akoko-Edo Development Association hopes its early intervention will inspire a shift toward justice and inclusivity in the new administration.
