Bill For Upgrading Federal Polytechnic, Unwana Afikpo Passes Second Reading
POLITICS DIGEST– A bill seeking to upgrade the Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana Afikpo, Ebonyi State to a federal university of technology passed second reading in the House of Representatives on Thursday.
Titled HB.744, the bill is being sponsored by ranking member of the House of Representatives, Iduma Enwo Igariwey, representing Afikpo North/Afikpo South.

It seeks “an Act to establish Akanu Ibiam Federal University of Technology, Unwana to provide training and teaching instruction in every field of education and such other fields applied of fields of learning relevant to the needs of the development of education in Nigeria, matters of administration and discipline of students and for related matters, 2020.”
Commenting on the latest development, Igariwey said in a statement: “The Bill seeks to upgrade the Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Unwana to a University of Technology.
“The upgrade of this oldest Federal Polytechnic in the South East could be a game changer as we seek for post Covid19 technology solutions, particularly from our tertiary institutions.
“If we must diversify our economy from oil, then we need to deepen the technology component of our national life. Every country that seeks to be transformative must embrace & deepen the application of science & technology.”
If the bill scales through, the new university would be the second after the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, in the South-East.
