Celebrating Senator Saliu Mustapha at 51
By AbdurRaheem Sa’ad Dembo
It is another year of celebration for Turaki of Ilorin, Senator Saliu Mustapha as he marks his 51st birthday today 25th September, 2023. All glory be to the Almighty God for sparing his life up to this moment with greater political progress.
It would be recalled that last year when I wrote about his 50th anniversary he was not a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria then.
Essentially, I will use the special day of his to still talk about how he has been a blessing to humanity. Senator Mustapha is not just a regular politician, because he does his things differently. What I mean by differently is that he is always willing to extend his hand of fellowship across party affiliations. In my previous piece sometimes in 2022 titled “The Distinction of Saliu Mustapha’s Magnanimity” I explained how he usually extends his generosity beyond party affiliation and how such has changed the political tradition in Kwara Central.
He is pragmatic and calculative in taking decisions, so this is why one can hardly see him making decisions that would not make public appeal. If I want to be mentioning it I won’t be able to say all I needed to say on his auspicious day.
Turaki of Ilorin’s political opponents cannot deny his generosity and magnanimity across board, which was why it was easy for him to gain victory in the 2023 General Elections where he defeated other opponents with a wide margin. I have learnt a lot of lesson from that election. One of the lessons is that it is not until you need people before you remember them for good. Reaching out to people when they need you is one of the best ways to gain public trust and win an election.

Furthermore, one’s birthday is a day of reflection for thanking Allah for abundant favour of being alive and healthy. It is on this note one would expect the Turaki of Ilorin to reflect, pray and consistently thanking Allah for His abundant favour upon him. Meanwhile the prayers of the teeming supporters of Senator Mustapha would also be worthwhile as his success is paramount to us.
Essentially, the Turaki of Ilorin and his colleagues have just spent barely four months at the red chamber, so it may be too early to assess him now. But from the way he has started gloriously by getting the Chairman, Senate Committee on Agricultural Services and Rural Development; also the Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Upstream (Petroleum), I believe strongly that he would live up to expectations. So, my prayer is for him to excel in all ramifications in his legislative duty and humanity enterprise.
Many who are supporting Senator Saliu Mustapha are doing so because his political philosophy is tantamount to friendliness and sincerity. The day you discover that your political principal is full of deceit then your affinity for him or her will wane drastically. One of his great assets that I know is that he doesn’t make empty promises. He follows his words up pragmatically. That is a good quality of a politician that wants to go far in the game.
Let me use this medium to remind those who are asking the question: ‘where is Saliu Mustapha?’ that the business of legislation is different from a normal administrative routine. His major duty currently is to legislate for the common good of all Nigerians, where he will subsequently facilitate a federal presence to Kwara Central Senatorial District.
The Turaki of Ilorin that we know will certainly not deviate from his responsibility to providing succour for the good people of Kwara Central through legislation, employment generation, empowerment and so on. May Allah help him to achieve these huge tasks.
I wish him a prosperous birthday and many happy returns of the day, bi qudratillah!
Sai Turaki!
