Constituency Project: Shekarau Provides Water to Kano Communities
POLITICS DIGEST– Senator representing Kano central, Ibrahim Shekarau has brought succour to some communities facing serious water shortages with the construction of 100 solar boreholes, as part of efforts to provide potable water for his constituents.
The beneficiaries of the Senator’s 2020 constituency intervention project include Sabo Bakin Zuwo maternity hospital Jakara, Kano Abattoir, the State Infectious Disease Hospital, Usman Jidda hospital and Yalwa community in Kumbotso Local Government Area among others.
The two major water treatment plants in the state supply less than the needed capacity of 400 million liters per day, as residents continue to grapple with the problem. Communities needing urgent intervention include hospitals and many other public places as the former Governor emphasized the importance of water.
Senator Ibrahim Shekarau on Friday commissioned these projects with the aim of improving access to clean water in strategic places.
According to the Senator, the boreholes, which contain high tech filters have the capacity of providing 10 thousand litres of water per day, were constructed at the cost of over 10 million naira each.

“The best you can give any individual is quality education and health care and when you talk of health, water plays a pivotal role. That is why when we thought of providing water in our communities as part of constituency interventions, the first places that came to mind were hospitals where a clean and sanitized environment is needed at all times”, Shekarau said in his speech.
Responding to the gesture, the Chief Medical Director of Sabo Bakin Zuwo maternity Hospital at Jakara , Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Dr Hauwa Mohammad said the intervention came at a time it is needed most. She, however, made some requests to the office of the senator for other urgent interventions.
She added that the hospital is seriously in need of a functional blood bank with a consistent power supply. “You will never know when a patient might need an emergency blood transfusion, we were forced to refer our patients to other hospitals when the need arises because we lack the capacity. Also, the big drainage behind the facility poses a big threat to the whole building as it overflows annually.
Shekarau, who is also a former minister of education, explained that about 190 million naira was earmarked for the intervention which cut across not just the provision of water but also other activities in the education sector.
Operators of the famous Abattoir market in Kano could not hide their joy as Shekarau commissioned yet another solar-powered borehole to support their activities.
Senator Shekarau enjoined beneficiaries of the modern borehole to use it judiciously and protect them from saboteurs at all times.
