Developing Kwara through Effective Lawmaking
By Beki Mubarak
Legislators play a crucial role in the functioning of any government, as they are responsible for crafting laws, establishing budgets, confirming executive appointments, and addressing the grievances of their constituents.
In the North Central region of Nigeria, Kwara State is represented by 24 lawmakers, with five female members championing the voices of their respective constituencies.
Since the inauguration of the 10th Assembly one year ago, Kwara’s lawmakers have notably fostered a harmonious working relationship with the other branches of government. This collaborative spirit has been instrumental in promoting effective governance.
Speaker Hon. Yakubu Danladi-Salihu emphasized the importance of this synergy, commending Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his prompt attention to the resolutions passed by the House.
His appreciation for the governor’s commitment to upholding the independence of the three arms of government has underlined the positive repercussions of this partnership on the state’s overall governance.
“The cordial relationship that exists among the arms of government is paying off in the state,” said Danladi-Salihu, expressing optimism for continued collaboration in the future.
In the past year alone, the Assembly has been remarkably productive, passing nine bills and 20 motions, while eight additional bills are presently undergoing legislative processes.

These laws illustrate the Assembly’s commitment to addressing pressing issues in education, environmental protection, and governance at the local level.
Moreover, the establishment of the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital and the Kwara State University of Education in 2024 illustrates an ongoing commitment to enhancing educational and healthcare facilities in the state—a vital component for developmental progress.
The Speaker also noted an innovative approach to legislative business, integrating new ideas while maintaining a commitment to established norms. In a further display of their dedication to public service, several lawmakers, including Senator Saliu Mustapha, have undertaken empowerment programs within their constituencies.
Senator Mustapha’s focus on human capital development, particularly in empowering women and youth, as well as his commitment to infrastructural development, has solidified his status as a key advocate for the people of Kwara Central.
As the 10th Assembly continues its work, it is clear that the legislators of Kwara State are not just law-makers; they are active participants in the development of their communities.
Their collaborative efforts, innovative approaches, and commitment to grassroots engagement offer a promising outlook for the future of governance in Kwara State.
