FG Earmarks N5.1bn for 185 Research, Innovation Projects
POLITICS DIGEST – The Nigerian Federal Government has announced the approval of N5,128,180,623 for funding 185 research projects, marking a significant milestone in the country’s pursuit of academic and scientific excellence.
This funding is part of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) National Research Fund 2023 Grant Cycle, an initiative dedicated to fostering research and innovation in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
Allocation of Funds
The allocation process was rigorous, starting with an evaluation of 4,287 Concept Notes submitted by research applicants. The funds are divided into three thematic groups: Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation, which received a whopping N3,784,635,923; Humanities and Social Science, allocated N759,875,400; and Cross-Cutting themes, receiving N583,669,300.63. The grants range from N8 million to over N46 million, signifying the government’s commitment to support varied scales of research.

The research projects funded span a broad spectrum of disciplines and sectors. Under the Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation umbrella, initiatives include developing a national water quality assurance plan, enhancing maize yield and armyworm tolerance, creating an intelligent multichamber evaporative cooling system for fruit storage, and developing an electric vehicle with tracking features. These projects aim to solve real-world problems while driving Nigeria’s technological prowess.
Cross-Cutting themes feature projects on renewable energy storage using scrap tires and plastic waste, production of aluminum alloy sacrificial anodes for the oil and gas industry, and a low voltage programmable electroporator for medical applications. These projects underscore the government’s commitment to interdisciplinary research and innovation.
Under the Humanities and Social Science category, projects focus on crucial societal issues such as digital financial inclusion, improving access to library resources for visually impaired students, and mitigating post-traumatic stress disorder among Nigerian army personnel. These initiatives reflect the government’s intent to address pressing social challenges while enhancing the quality of life for Nigerian citizens.
