On Extravagance Spending By Governors,
By Saleh Shehu Ashaka
In Northern Nigeria, the paradoxical allocation of government funds paints a stark contrast between misplaced priorities and urgent needs. The recent instances of extravagant spending by governors raise serious questions about their commitment to addressing the fundamental challenges faced by their constituents.
The decision of one governor to allocate a staggering N6.7 billion for Ramadan feeding while ignoring the dire state of primary schools lacking basic amenities such as chairs and desks is not just concerning but downright irresponsible. The ostentatious display of wealth during a religious festival stands in sharp contrast to the everyday struggles of ordinary citizens who deserve access to quality education and essential resources.

Similarly, the lavish expenditure of nearly N1 billion on mass weddings reflects a skewed sense of priorities that fails to address the root causes of poverty and social inequality. While the gesture may seem charitable on the surface, it does little to address the systemic issues that perpetuate economic hardship and lack of opportunity for the most vulnerable members of society.
Furthermore, the proposal to construct 10 new state universities, while existing primary schools remain in deplorable conditions, is a glaring example of misplaced investment. Education at the foundational level is crucial for the development and empowerment of future generations, yet it continues to be neglected in favor of grandiose projects that serve primarily as political capital rather than genuine development initiatives.
It is high time for elected officials in Northern Nigeria to reassess their priorities and focus on meaningful and sustainable solutions that uplift all segments of society. The mismanagement of public funds and disregard for the basic needs of the populace cannot be tolerated any longer. It is imperative for leaders to listen to the voices of the people, prioritize essential services like education and healthcare, and work towards building a more equitable and prosperous future for all. Anything less is a betrayal of the trust placed in them by the citizens they are meant to serve.
