GCC, UNICEF Host Sports, Poetry, and Drama Competition to Mark International Day of the Girl Child

Girl Child Concerns (GCC), in collaboration with UNICEF, called on parents and stakeholders to support school completion for girls at all levels, emphasizing that “Education is the only tool that turns nobody into somebody.”
The celebration, held in Maiduguri at the GCC Girls Academy on Friday, was attended by students from various schools in Maiduguri, including GGSS Yerwa, Government Girls College, and others.

In her opening remarks, the Special Adviser and Coordinator of Sustainable Development Partnerships and Humanitarian Support to Governor Zulum, Dr. Mairo Mandara, said that the International Day of the Girl Child is a day for girls and women to celebrate their achievements and to restrategize in order to fulfill their ever-ambitious dreams for the future.
Hajiya Uwani Ladan, Principal of the Academy, and Hajiya Hauwa Gwoma, the Coordinator, urged the students to strive for excellence so they can become valuable not only to themselves or their state but also to the entire country and Africa at large.
The celebration featured presentations on girls’ rights to economic opportunities, issues related to GBV, the importance of education, poetry recitations, dramas performed by students, and a four-round race within the GCC Academy.
In attendance were the Borno State Coordinator of the Multisectoral Crisis Recovery Project (MCRP), Zannah Abdulkarim, the Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Advocacy, Transparency, and Accountability Initiative (CATAI), Abubakar Sadiq Mu’azu, along with other key stakeholders.
