Girl Child Mentorship: NGO Trains 85 Teachers in 24 Borno Schools

The Girl Child Concerns, GCC, in conjunction with the Borno State Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), has organized a five-day training program for teachers on establishing ‘safe spaces’ for girls in 24 schools within Northern Borno.
The training began today in Maiduguri at the Babagana Wakil Integrated Higher Islamic School. It will end on Saturday with 85 teachers as participants.
The program lead, Ummulkhairi Usman, said that the training is aimed at equipping teachers with the necessary mentorship skills to guide adolescent girls in their various schools.

She described the adolescent period as a challenging and dangerous stage that requires enormous advisory support and mentorship to help students and non-student girls to avert the consequences of irresponsible adolescence.
In a keynote address, the AGILE Project Coordinator, Borno, Engr. Ibrahim Baba said that the importance of the training cannot be overemphasized, urging teachers to acquire as many skills as possible in the training to help students realize their potential and make achievable decisions in the Safe Space while discussing their problems or lives in general.
“Young girls are facing a lot of problems in our society and they are the prime movers of development. Therefore, necessary support must be given to them in and outside schools for them to be productive and beneficial to themselves and the society as well.”
- Speaking, the coordinator of Girl Child Concerns Academy Hauwa Musa Gwoma explained that adolescent girls cannot become women of substance without proper guidance and counseling, and consistent mentorship.
