Gov Akeredolu: Life and Times of a Legal Luminary Turned Political Juggernaut By Kabir Akintayo

POLITICS DIGEST- The late governor of Ondo state, Rotimi Akeredolu was a prominent Nigerian politician who was widely respected and influential, particularly in the southwest region and the country at large. His dedication to public service, strong leadership qualities, commitment to the welfare of the people and concern for South West’s insecurity, were legendary and also set him apart as a consummate politician.

At a time when the southwest battled banditry, Akeredolu, with help of other southwest governors, championed the initiative of ‘Amotekun’, solely for safety and security purposes. Thus, assisting the police to track down kidnappers, bandits and other criminals in the region.

The late governor also stood his ground in a face-off with the federal government, which maintained that only federal approved security outfit are legalised to bear arms. In the long run, Akeredolu, with the help of major stakeholders and other governors, were able to established ‘Amotekun’, resulting thereafter in the reduction of crime in the southwest.

Born on July 21, 1956, in Owo, Ondo State, Akeredolu, after completing his primary and secondary education in Imoru and Loyola College, Ibadan, proceeded to the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Law. He furthered his education by obtaining a Master’s degree in Law from the University of Lagos.

He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1978 and began practicing law at the Ministry of Justice in Lagos State. Subsequently, he established his law firm, Rotimi Akeredolu & Co., where he distinguished himself as a thoroughbred lawyer, renowned for his expertise and professionalism.

His foray into politics began in the early 1990s when he actively participated in social and political activities. He joined the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), a prominent political movement that fought for the restoration of democracy during the military regime in Nigeria.

After the transition to democracy in 1999, Akeredolu served as the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Ondo State under the administration of Governor Adebayo Adefarati. His remarkable performance in this role caught the attention of many, showcasing his astute legal acumen and leadership skills.

In 2012, Akeredolu ran unsuccessfully for the position of Governor of Ondo State on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). However, he remained committed to his political ambitions and in 2016 made another bid for the office, this time on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Akeredolu’s campaign focused on values such as transparency, infrastructural development, education, and healthcare reform.

He emerged victorious in the gubernatorial election held on November 26, 2016, and was subsequently inaugurated as the Governor of Ondo State on February 24, 2017. In his capacity as governor, he pursued numerous initiatives aimed at advancing the welfare and development of the state.

During his tenure as governor, Akeredolu made significant strides in various sectors, leaving a lasting impact on the people of Ondo State. His administration prioritized infrastructure development, education, healthcare, agriculture, and environmental sustainability, aiming to improve the quality of life for all residents.

Under his leadership, several road construction projects were initiated, healthcare facilities were improved, and educational institutions were upgraded with modern facilities. Agricultural programs were implemented to enhance food security and boost the agricultural sector.

Furthermore, Akeredolu’s commitment to environmental sustainability led to the implementation of tree planting campaigns, waste management programs, and awareness campaigns focused on conservation and climate change.

One notable achievement was the establishment of the ‘Mother and Child Hospital’, a specialized medical facility that catered primarily to the needs of mothers and children. This hospital not only provided essential medical care but also offered training programs for medical professionals, ensuring a sustainable healthcare ecosystem within the state.

The late governor also played a critical role in the emergence of his friend and a political leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who together with him, fought the injustice during the military regime of Late General Sani Abacha.

While undergoing treatment for leukaemia in January 2023, he had a long period of medical absence, leaving Ondo in a state of political quagmire.

However, after the intervention of President Tinubu, Akeredolu transmitted power to his Deputy to act as governor, leaving for another round of foreign medical treatment in Germany, about a fortnight ago.

Governor Akeredolu’s life and political career were marked by dedication, integrity, and a genuine desire to serve the people of Ondo State and the southwest region. His contributions in the realms of governance, law, and public service have left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political landscape. Akeredolu’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations, and his achievements will be remembered as a testament to his visionary leadership and commitment to the betterment of society.

Akeredolu died at the age of 67, leaving behind his wife, Betty Anyanwu Akeredolu and his four children.
