64th Independence Anniversary: Hon. Bankole Advocates for a Truly Inclusive Nigeria

By Kabir Akintayo

As Nigeria marks its 64th Independence Anniversary, Hon. Tolu Bankole, National Leader for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) under the All Progressives Congress (APC), has called on the nation to intensify efforts toward building a more inclusive and equitable society.

In a statement released on Monday, Bankole expressed pride in Nigeria’s achievements but emphasized the need for a future where no one is left behind, particularly Persons with Disabilities.

He highlighted the importance of creating an environment that embraces all citizens, regardless of their abilities.

Bankole also expressed deep gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC-led administration for their unwavering commitment to inclusivity.

He noted that Tinubu’s government has actively prioritized the welfare of PWDs through various progressive policies and initiatives.

“President Tinubu’s administration has shown steadfast dedication to the well-being of PWDs through its Renewed Hope agenda. This agenda has expanded social intervention programs, improved access to education, healthcare, and skill acquisition for PWDs. These initiatives are a clear testament to the government’s belief that true national development must encompass every segment of society,” Bankole stated.

Addressing the country’s current economic difficulties, Bankole acknowledged the toll inflation, rising living costs, and economic instability have taken on the general populace.

He noted that PWDs, in particular, are bearing the brunt of these challenges but urged Nigerians to stay optimistic.

“These are difficult times, and Persons With Disabilities feel the full weight of these hardships. Yet, we must stay hopeful. The ongoing reforms, though tough, are crucial steps towards stabilizing the economy and paving the way for a prosperous future,” Bankole said.

Reflecting on the progress made in promoting PWD rights, Bankole noted the significant strides taken in recent years.

He said, “From years of marginalization to being recognized as an integral part of the nation’s development, PWDs have come a long way. The enactment of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act in 2018 remains a watershed moment in our quest for inclusion.

“This landmark legislation has laid the foundation for the protection of the rights of PWDs, providing a platform for advocacy, equal opportunities, and access to public services,” Bankole said.
