INEC Rejects Bello’s Notice of NEC Meeting, Says Buni Remains APC Chairman

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s notice of National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting signed by Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger state.
According to the invitation letter to INEC, the NEC meeting is scheduled to hold next week.
The Commission referred to the party letter dated 8th March, 2022 titled ‘’Invitation to the emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee’’.
Governor Sani Bello took over the leadership of the party on Monday 7th March in a controversial situation that claimed Mai Mala Buni had been sacked as Chairman with the consent of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Though a leaked letter of Mai Mala Buni reportedly written before he travelled out of the country, indicated that he handed over to Bello as the vice chairman before his trip.
In a letter addressed to the National Chairman, All Progressive Congress, Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) dated 9th March, 2022 and signed by Secretary to the Commission, Rose Onaran-Anthony, INEC drew the party’s attention to the fact that the notice for the meeting was not signed by Buni contrary to the provision of the Article 1.1.3 of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for political party operations (2018).
The letter read in part, ‘’Furthermore, the APC is reminded of the provision in Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 which requires ‘’at least 21 days’’ notice of any convention, congress , conference, or meeting convened for the purpose of ‘’merger’’ and electing members of its executive committee, other governing bodies or nominating candidates for any elective offices.’’
