Kano Emir urges BUK alumni to assist in development of alma mater
POLITICS DIGEST- The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado-Bayero, has urged Bayero University, Kano (BUK) Alumni Association to intensify efforts in assisting to bolster the development of their alma mater.
Ado-Bayero, who is also an alumnus of the university, Mass Communications class of 1984, made the call on Saturday in Kano,at a lecture on the “Importance of Alumni Association and its Relevance”.
The lecture was organised by the Mass Communications Alumni Association (BUMCAA) of the school, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the department.
“We have no words other than to thank the Almighty Allah who has blessed us to be educated in this great university.
“We shall continue to congratulate each other for this blessing, it is not our making, but the will of Allah and His blessings on us.
“So, it is good for us to see how we can continue assisting our alma mater, based on our ability.
“We should also assist those who are less privileged in the society,” he said.
The Emir further urged the current students and the alumni to continue to be good ambassadors of the institution wherever they find themselves.
In his remarks, the University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sagir Adamu-Abbas, congratulated the department for the successes recorded.
Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Management Services, Prof. Mahmud Sani, the VC said that the alumni have great roles to play in the development of the institution.
He said that the management is ready to collaborate with them to continue moving the institution forward.

“They have invaluable roles to play in infrastructure development, mentoring of younger ones and giving us feedback,” he said
The lecture was presented by Alhaji Garba Bello-Kankarofi, former Registrar, Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON), who is also an alumnus of the department.
He advised the alumni to ensure stable and friendly relationship with the institution.
Bello-Kankarofi cautioned them against being an opposition to the university’s administration, breach of trust and financial abuses.
The Head of Mass Communications Department, Dr Mainasara Yakubu-Kurfi, said that the department was created in 1978, with 31 students and four academic staff.
He said that the department is now a faculty that has a new FM radio station, tagged “BUK-FM 98.9”, which is serving as a platform for training broadcast students.
Yakubu-Kurfi added that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has also approved a licence for the establishment of a television station in the institution.
He noted that besides B.Sc Mass Communications undergraduate programme, the department offers professional and academic post-graduate programmes, including PhD.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Majority Leader, House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, an alumnus of 1990, donated N10 million to the faculty and the department.
The Member representing Kano Municipal, Sha’aban Sharada, an alumnus of 2011, secured an approval for the establishment of a computer laboratory for the department.
Other alumni who graced the occasion were Brig.-Gen. Samaila Uba and retired Brig.-Gen. Sani Kukasheka, among others. (NAN)
