MAAUN as fastest growing private university in Nigeria, By Adnan Mukhtar
Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria is so far the fastest-growing university in the country. I came to this conclusion after a visit to the institution of repute on Tuesday at the invitation of the founder.
The founder whom I regard as not only my leader but a benefactor in life. On a Tuesday morning, I received a call from Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, the founder of 4 private universities in Nigeria
He first established the Maryam Abacha American of Niger, the university has graduated thousands of students from 2012 to date in various disciplines of learning.
Professor Gwarzo’s intervention contributed to the high number of nursing graduates in the country with the introduction of a degree in nursing sciences at a time when no university in the country was offering nursing sciences.
The university has also graduated hundreds of lawyers in the country.
The Philanthropist cum academic went ahead to establish the Franco-British International University Kaduna and the Canadian University of Nigeria. The universities will kick start academic activities in 2024 and 2025 respectively.
At Maryam Abacha American University I witnessed the arrival of some students in hundreds and when I asked Professor Gwarzo who are those people, he replied: “They are our Nursing students who came back from practicals.”

I was inspired by the founder’s good relationship with students. How every student passing would have a stopover to greet the Founder. “Good Afternoon Sir”. The founder would later ask them about their studies, and whether there was a problem or not. The students would reply to him with “No Sir.”
Professor Gwarzo later asked me to accompany him on a working visit to Azman University to strengthen and collaborate with the university on areas of research and learning.
We were received by the Vice Chancellor Professor Fatima Batul Mukhtar, Dean Faculty of Computing Professor Amina Salihu Bayero, the University’s Registrar, Bursar, and other principal staff.
He urged the management to ensure standards in managing the affairs of the institution as a veteran and founder of universities.
He also assured the university management of his support and that his doors were always open.
After we came back to MAAUN, we went on an inspection around the university there I came across a Twin Theater named after Professor Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, a newly built faculty of law, and another big theatre under construction.
Last week, the university held its 3rd matriculation ceremony for new students where it matriculated 1,380 students, one of the largest matriculation of a private university in the country.
Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria has over 3,700 students since the commencement of academic activities in 2021. This is why I called it the fastest-growing private university in the country at the beginning of this article.
