Mallam Nuhu Ribadu: A Refreshing Approach to National Security Adviser, By Saleh Shehu Ashaka
The recent criticism directed towards Mallam Nuhu Ribadu as being too political for the role of National Security Adviser (NSA) in Nigeria fails to grasp the evolving nature of the position. Given Nigeria’s history of military rule and the militarization of the office by previous holders, it is essential to recognize the multifaceted nature of the NSA’s responsibilities.
This opinion piece aims to shed light on the importance of having a proactive and politically astute NSA like Ribadu, highlighting his potential to prevent conflicts and foster dialogue. Contrary to popular belief, the NSA is not solely responsible for the military aspects of national security. The role extends beyond the military realm to encompass areas such as politics, economy, social stability, and food security.
A competent NSA should proactively identify and address potential threats before they escalate, employing negotiation and conflict resolution as necessary tools. One example of an effective and influential NSA is Henry Kissinger, who successfully utilized negotiation and diplomacy as instruments of national security.

Kissinger’s approach, known as “shuttle diplomacy,” involved acting as an intermediary between conflicting parties to reach peaceful resolutions. Similarly, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu demonstrated this ability during the recent Rivers crisis, employing his political astuteness to defuse tensions. In situations where powerful political forces threaten to ignite crises, such as the Niger-Delta militancy, a viable option for an NSA like Ribadu is to pursue détente. By engaging in dialogue and building bridges between opposing factions, potential conflicts can be averted. Ribadu deserves recognition for his efforts in preventing further escalation of the crisis in Rivers.
An effective NSA must possess both military capability and political acumen. Without a holistic understanding of security that includes conflict resolution, an NSA may view conflicts as inevitable and fail to explore alternatives. Ribadu’s ability to comprehend the complexities of political dynamics sets him apart, thus enabling him to consider peaceful resolutions rather than resorting to force. Reflecting on past events, one can envision how Ribadu’s approach could have altered the outcomes in critical situations.
For instance, had he served as NSA between 2015 and 2023, the tragic incident involving the Shiites in Zaria might have been avoided through dialogue and understanding. Similarly, the #EndSARS movement could have been met with meaningful dialogue rather than the unfortunate events that transpired. Moreover, the Ganduje-Kwankwaso impasse in Kano could have been resolved via consultation, ensuring continued peace.
Mallam Nuhu Ribadu brings a refreshing approach to the role of National Security Adviser, encapsulating the true essence of comprehensive security. His proactive and politically astute nature enables him to navigate complex challenges, prevent conflicts, and foster dialogue.
By recognizing the evolving nature of this position, we can appreciate the significance of having an NSA who embraces negotiation and conflict resolution as essential tools for securing the nation. Mallam Nuhu Ribadu exemplifies these qualities and is a deserving candidate for the role.
