Nigeria: As “Citizens Unite” Tap Osinbajo In Lagos, by Adnan Mukhtar Tudunwada
POLITICS DIGEST – Citizens Unite is a group of intellectual young people that gathered in Lagos from across Nigeria with the sole aim of seeking for political solution to the long overdue challenges that have held the country.
The event which took place at Sheraton Hotel had over 1000 people in attendance.
From the unique coinage of its name one quickly gets the chilling impression that a movement that has the interest of Nigeria’s Unity in diversity is birthed.
Unlike other political youth groups that ends up with praise singings and unwarranted encomiums on their preferred aspirants without substantial facts, the Citizens United opts to take a different path.
In briefing invited guests at the Lagos Convention, Convener of the movement Maryam Shettima popularly known as Shetty assured the movement have the sole mandate of making a huge difference that will impact livelihoods of Nigerians in general.
That was not just a mere say the statement was evident from the calibre of people that attended the event.
As a young person yearning for a prosperous Nigeria, I was part of the people invited for the group’s first activity in Nigeria’s centre for excellence.
The convener, Shetty, a beautiful young woman advocating for women inclusion in politics with strong passion for a better Nigeria invited me to the event, something I would not turn down. She’s a woman of substance, love, kindness and very dear to my person.
I can testified to her credible integrity, humility and dedication to the development of this country.
Leaders of Citizens Unite presented their brief speech one after the other ended it with the endorsement of Professor Yemi Osinbajo presidency.
According to them, the Vice President is the best option among all the Presidential Aspirants in both parties by giving some cogent reasons.
Maryam Shetty, the leader and convener made the best speech about the group and Vice President in particular, describing him as a matured gentleman that can take this country to an ultimate triumph.
“The gathering will not stop in Lagos but will take place in each of the geo-political zones ahead of the 2023 election”. Said Shetty while addressing journalists after the event.

She continued that, “Osinbajo who has attained the pinnacle of greateness with professional success, becoming an overseer of a church as a Pastor, a Professor in the academia and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in the legal profession. He is a model for young people, carrying them along through mentorship and his humility.
“When I was working as a young Physiotherapist at the State House Clinic in 2012-2013 I had the privilege of coming across various people in leadership positions. One peculiar thing I observed, there is a certain way people in power behave and humility was hardly part of that. Curiously, with Professor Yemi Osinbajo since during the campaign in 2015 I knew that PYO is going to be the Vice President with a difference! He had time and a listening ear for ordinary Nigerians that needed a voice”. She said
Yemi Osinbajo is not only a visionary leader but a professional and approachable technocrat.
We are testimonial to his credible integrity when the social investment programme was handled by his office. This has earned him street credibility with the N-Power and Trader Money before the creation of the Ministry for Humanitarian Affairs headed by Sadiya Umar Farouk.
The Citizens united is a non tribalist movement with almost the representatives of all tribes in Nigeria seeking for a political and economic solution to this country.
Ms Shetty further emphasised that Nigerians should search for a leader with these qualities putting competency the requirement by keeping aside ethnic bigotry.
Nigeria as a heterogenous country should shun the politics of religion or ethnicity if seriously we want to address the challenges the country is facing today.
At the end of her speech, she throw a challenge to Nigerians of any presidential aspirant with credible integrity, competence and professional success like Yemi Osinbajo with the audience chanting NO.
The Citizens Unite went ahead to launch a mobile application PYO which is already available on Play Store.
The mobile application will give you insight on PYO stories, career and journey into politics.
It’s an avenue for supporters of Osinbajo presidency to speak to him directly and get some answers. This is very strategic while I urge the leaders of Citizens Unite like Shetty to reach the grassroots towards getting millions of supporters.
This is the first time in the history of Nigeria supporters of a presidential aspirant would be mobilising support in such way even though the Vice President is yet to declare his interest publicly, the Citizens Unite have boldy called on the Vice President to declare his interest in the 2023 presidential election.
As Citizens Unite set the stage and light the sparks in Lagos, we can only hope for the best for Nigeria and Nigerians.
