Nigerian interests in the Sudanese conflict: Why intervention is necessary- By Abdulganiyu Rufai Yakub
The continuous bloodshed in Sudan has alarmed the world community, and numerous nations and organizations have called for a peaceful end to the fighting. Nigeria, which has a sizable population of individuals of Nigerian descent living in Sudan, is one of the nations with an interest in the conflict. The security and stability of Nigeria and the wider area may be affected by claims that the Hausas in Sudan are being exposed to firearms and military training. Given these elements, Nigeria must take the initiative to contribute to the peaceful resolution of the Sudanese crisis. The presence of a large number of Nigerians in Sudan means that Nigeria has a responsibility to protect their interests and ensure their safety and well-being. It is also important for Nigeria to prevent any spill-over effects of the conflict into its own territory, which could have serious security implications.

A long-running conflict between Hausa communities and their neighbors in various parts of Sudan forced the Hausa communities to form some ragtag militia groups near the Sudanese border to Ethiopia’s Tigray regions before the military uprising that resulted in full-scale war in Sudan. Therefore, if the conflict between the military generals continues, it could end up strengthening the weak and small militia groups, which would be extremely dangerous for nations like Nigeria, Niger, and its neighbors. The exposure of Hausas to military training and equipment in Sudan should also be a cause for concern, as this may aid in the expansion of both rebel organizations and weapons.
This might put not only Sudan, but also Nigeria and other adjacent countries in jeopardy. Nigeria must work with other regional actors to halt the spread of these activities and improve stability and security in the area. In addition to these security concerns, Nigeria has a responsibility as a prominent African country and a member of the international community to support peace and stability in Sudan. A humanitarian crisis has arisen as a result of the violence, which has caused thousands of people to be displaced and many more to lose their lives. Nigeria might be a key player in mediating the dispute and assisting in the search for a lasting settlement thanks to its experience in peacekeeping and conflict resolution.
In conclusion, given the enormous number of its citizens who are of Nigerian descent in the nation, as well as the possible security and humanitarian ramifications of the conflict for the larger area, Nigeria has a compelling interest in intervening in the continuing crisis in Sudan. Nigeria can leverage its experience and expertise in conflict resolution to assist in resolving the situation peacefully and to advance regional stability and security.
