Northern Youths to Sen. Ahmed Lawan: For Once, Put Nigeria First and Reject Lauretta’s Nomination
POLITICS DIGEST– The Northern Youths Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has received with rude shock the referral of the name of Lauretta Onochie, the Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Mr. President and nominee for INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner Representing Delta State, to the Senate Committee on INEC, for screening and possible recommendation for confirmation or rejection.
In a statement signed by the President of the Council Abubakar Isa and Mock Samuel Kure thought that the issue should have been laid to rest for the interest of the nation.
The statement which read in parts:
“While we erroneously thought that her issue has been put to rest and buried in a six feet grave casted with steel rods, the sudden resurrection of her nomination, that is been rejected by Nigerians, will not blow anybody good wind.

As a partisan politician, we have available evidence to prove that Ms Lauretta’s appointment violates Section 14(2a) of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which states that “a member of the commission shall be non-partisan and a person of unquestionable integrity.”
Hence, she does not have any business serving as INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner. If she so desire to occupy a political office, it is advisable for her to print posters and try her popularity among her people. She is not the only competent person in Delta State that must be forced on the throat of Nigerians. If Mr. President cannot do without her, he is free to appoint her into any MDAs of his choice.
We believe strongly that 2023 will decide the fate of our country that is currently experiencing different wave of agitations by ethnic secessionists. Therefore, the election must be conducted in a manner that is acceptable to all.
But with Lauretta and possibly, other partisan persons as electoral umpires, members of the opposition parties would not accept it as the will and verdict of Nigerians, if the election eventually favours the ruling party.
On the strength of the above, we wish to call on the Senator Ahmed Lawan-led 9th Senate and members of the affected Committee to put Nigeria First for once, and reject the Nomination of Ms Lauretta. They should not forget that they swore with Nigeria’s Constitution and the Holy Qur’an/Bible to work for the interest of Nigerians, not any other individual”.
