By Kabir Akintayo

The Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Benneth C. Igweh, has said that the police will not be stampeded into allowing the destruction of public and private properties or loss of lives in the name of protest.

The Force therefore vowed to resist any form of violent protest and lawlessness in the nation’s capital.

This is as the command announced the deployment of 4,200 personnel ahead of the upcoming demonstration to prevent the protests from being hijacked by violent non-state actors.

In a statement by Josephine Adeh, Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Command on Friday, Igweh acknowledged the right of residents to protest but insisted that it must be peaceful.

“The proactive deployment, which is aimed at ensuring public safety, protection of protesters, and preventing protests from being hijacked by non-state actors, is characterised by visibility policing, the deployment of explosive ordinance devices (EOD) experts and personnel at various strategic locations, raids on identified black spots, uncompleted buildings/shanties, stop and search, vehicular and foot patrol and synergy with sister security agencies,” the statement read in part.

The command also urged residents to be vigilant and report suspicious activities through: 08032003913, 08028940883, 08061581938, 07057337653 PCB: 09022222352, CRU: 08107314192.
