President Tinubu’s Reconciliation Move in Kano Politics, By Mahmud Shuaibu Ringim
The invitation extended by APC’s National Chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, to the NNPP’s Presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for joining the APC serves as an olive branch for peace and reconciliation. Despite the deviation from established protocol, this gesture aligns with President Tinubu’s strategy to unite the NNPP government in Kano with the APC at the federal level, similar to the early stages of the APC merger.
President Tinubu has also undertaken reconciliation efforts in Rivers State to ease tensions between Governor Fubara and former governor turned FCT minister, Mr. Wike. However, the dynamics in Kano differ significantly, with the President aiming to secure support from a state crucial in the APC’s 2015 success under Kwankwaso’s leadership.
Observing the post-Supreme Court judgment political landscape in Kano, it appears Ganduje’s political career may be waning due to APC’s defeat in the 2023 elections. President Tinubu, a seasoned politician, recognizes the importance of strategic realignment and troop reinforcement for successful political engagement.

The electoral value of a politician is tied to their ability to secure votes, as exemplified by President Buhari’s candidacy in 2015. Tinubu’s move to reconcile with NNPP stems from the party’s impressive performance in Kano during the 2023 elections, overshadowing the APC. This shift is a challenge for Ganduje, who faced defeat despite holding significant political leverage.
President Tinubu’s interest in reconciling past associates involved in bringing PDP into the APC merger reflects a desire to unite key political figures. Notably, Kwankwaso’s pivotal role in the success of the APC merger strengthens the President’s motivation.
The leadership dispute in Kano’s APC, with Ganduje claiming leadership even if Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf joins APC, sets the stage for the national body to decide the party’s direction. The negotiation favors NNPP, as Kwankwasiya movement maintains strong control over Kano politics, giving them a position of strength.
In conclusion, President Tinubu’s efforts aim to leverage the strengths of NNPP, particularly Kwankwaso’s influence, for the benefit of Kano under the Renewed Hope Agenda. As the political landscape unfolds, the trajectory towards 2027 appears unstoppable.
