UK Prime Minister Hopeful and Nigeria’s ‘Sentimental’ Politics
By Abdulaziz Nyako,
There are the three candidates vying for the position of the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister.
One of them is Mr Sunak, who is currently leading. He is 42 years of age and of Indian descent (He is probably a Hindu). The other two are women.
I have watched a few of their debates. Nobody has ever brought up their race, religion or gender.
The debates have been completely about the socioeconomic development of the UK and who could be trusted to deliver.

Here in Nigeria, however, the debate has been about Christian/Muslim, Muslim/Muslim, North/South ticket. In my State it has been about whether a woman (Binani) should lead etc etc etc!
Nobody is talking about competencies. Nobody is talking about a plan to get local governments, states and Nigeria out of our current quagmire. This is indeed very sad for all of us! This attitude would take us no where but sink us further into the abyss!
We must have a change of attitude.
We must have a plan for our people.
These debates must shift towards the plans that the candidates at all levels have for our people and a Master Plan for Nigeria covering all tiers of Government and all sectors of the economy.
Ultimately, we must rise above our primordial sentiments and vote the right people into offices based on trust and competence.
