REMASAB Staff kicks against the engagement of private company to evacuate Kano refuse
POLITICS DIGEST– Some Staff of Refused Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) has kicked against the engagement of a private company to evacuate kano refuse.
The staff who pleaded for anonymity condemned the decision of the state government over the engagement of the company that they described has failed in the discharge of similarly responsibility in Kaduna State.
It would be recalled that the State Commissioner for Environment Dr Kabiru Ibrahim Getso has announced the scrapping of REMASAB and the engagement of a private company for refuse management in an interview with Freedom Radio on Friday in Kano.
He said the decision of the state government will not affect the staff of the agency. Some of the staff will be posted to other agencies while others that are in contract will be retained by the company that will take over refuse management in the state.
According to the Commissioner, the state government has signed an agreement with a private company that will take over refuse management and converting it to a waste for modern fertiliser, gas and for electricity consumption.
The Company which the state government did not disclose will pay 50 million to the government in the first year, 100 million for the second year and 200 million in the third year.
Dr Getso said the company will employ the services of 4000 people including engineers and will double their salary.
The scrapping of REMASAB has been condemned by the people of the state including government officials.
“Handing over the activities of the agency to a private company that failed to discharge such responsibility in Kaduna State is worrisome”.
“The cars and all the tools of the agency has been handed over to private company. The company will use the agency’s building in the cause of their work.

MOU Between Capegate Investment Company Limited and Kano State Government
POLITICS DIGEST reliably gathered that the MOU between Kano State Government and Capegate Investment Company Limited that will be taken over the activities of REMASAB was not discussed in the State Executive Council neither with the Managing Director of the agency Abdullahi Muazu Gwarzo nor the state assembly.
It was an agreement between the Company and the State Commissioner of Environment who represented Kano State in the MOU.
“As an agency that was established by the law of Kano State House of Assembly, it’s illegal to scrap it without the consent of the state assembly”. Said a kano based lawyer Ibrahim Arif Garba
The State House of Assembly was not consulted and the matter was not discussed in the State Executive Council only the announcement of the scrapping was done during council meeting.
This was solely done by the Commissioner of Environment and the Governor.
A source told POLITICS DIGEST that the Managing Director of REMASAB Abdullahi Muazu Gwarzo only heard about the announcement of the scrapping by the state commissioner for environment on radio.
Capegate Investment Company Limited is currently in a legal tussle with 14 companies that worked for the removal of solid waste evacuation which the companies rendered individually within Zaria, Kafanchan and Kaduna Metropolitan areas.
Capegate has neglected and refused to pay them the sum of more than sixty million naira for their services inspite of repeated demands.
All efforts to reach Capegate Investment Company Limited over the matter was abortive and the state commissioner for environment cannot be reached by this paper for comment.
