By Kabir Abdulsalam
The Federal Government has condemned Daily Trust for its “reckless and irresponsible” reporting, which it says threatens national security and stability.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the condemnation at a press conference in Abuja on Saturday.
Idris accused the newspaper of consistently publishing “false and misleading” stories, including a recent report that the government had signed a deal to promote LGBTQ rights.

He described the report as “wicked” and “despicable,” and described the newspaper’s actions as “a deliberate effort to brush the government with a tar.”
The minister expressed concern that the newspaper’s reporting had the potential to incite violence and destabilize the country.
He said the government had been tolerant of media criticism, but would not stand by while “fake news and disinformation” threatened national security.
Idris announced that the government would be lodging a formal complaint with the NPAN Ombudsman and seeking legal action against Daily Trust.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to a free press, but said it would not tolerate “irresponsible” reporting.
