‘Senate May Kill Hate Speech Bill’
POLITICS DIGEST – There are strong Indications that the upper legislative chamber of the National Assembly may kill the Bill proposing death by hanging or life jail term on promoters of hate speech.
Recall that on Tuesday, “A Bill for an Act to provide for the prohibition of hate speeches and for other related matters,” sponsored by Senator Aliu Sabi Abdullahi, passed first reading.

Fielding questions from Senate Correspondents on Wednesday, the spokesman of the Senate, Senator Godiya Akwashiki said that the Bill will be subjected to debate, adding that it may be killed if the lawmakers discovered it will create hardship for the people.
He said: “A Bill is just a process, it will be subjected to debate by lawmakers. If the Bill will create hardship, it will be killed on the floor of the Senate. I appeal for patience and when the Bill come for second reading, we will know the direction, whether the bill will be passed or not.”
Further recall that the anti-hate speech Bill was first introduced to the floor of the 8th Senate by the then Spokesman of the Senate, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi,failed to secure passage because of public negative perception of the Bill.
However Senator Abdullahi who is currently the deputy Whip of the Senate on Tuesday reintroduced the same Bill to the 9th Senate for consideration
