Shekarau, Ganduje Condole as Kano Loses Ex-Attorney-General, Aliyu Umar
POLITICS DIGEST – Former Kano State Attorney-General and commissioner for justice, Aliyu Umar, SAN has died.
He died in early hours of Friday at about 4:00 am after a brief illness.
He has since been buried, according to Islamic rites
The 68-year-old lawyer served as the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of the state between 2003 and 2011 during the administration of Ibrahim Shekarau.
Late Aliyu Umar was reputed to be a fiery criminal law expert, one of the best in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the former Governor of Kano state, and the Senator representing Kano Central, Ibrahim Shekarau has condoled with the family of the deceased.
Shekarau on his Facebook page said: “With great sadness, we announce the Death of our Friend and Brother, Aliyu Umar, SAN.
“May Allah (SWT) forgive his sins and grant him Aljannatul Firdausee us. May Allah give us the fortitude to bear this great loss,” the Senator said.

Similarly, Kano state Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has described the late Attorney General as an Icon, who left indelible mark in the history and practice of judiciary in the country.
In statement on Friday signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Abba Anwar, Ganduje said, “We really missed one of the country’s finest legal practitioners.
“We are touched severely with the passing away of our own, Barrister Aliyu Umar (SAN) who was two times Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice of our dear state,” he stated.
Governor Ganduje said Barrister Umar was an epitome of justice, as well as “…an embodiment of unrivalled and unassuming dispensation of justice, which was manifested in his struggle for the promotion of access to justice and equality before the Law.”
He prayed for Allah’s Mercy and Blessings on the reposed soul of the late Attorney General, while calling on his children to follow his suit for loving and serving humanity, for the overall development of man, as a centre of development.
“On behalf of the government and good people of Kano state, I am sending this condolence message to the families of our beloved Barrister Aliyu Umar SAN, Kano state, Nigerian judiciary and the nation as a whole. As his death leaves a great vacuum in the nation’s judicial system,” Ganduje added.
