Subsidy Hardship: Kano CSOs Won’t Join NLC Nationwide Strike – Waiya
By Ozumi Abdul
In what has the semblance of cutting president Bola Ahmed Tinubu a slack regarding fuel subsidy removal, the chairman of Civil Society Organizations (CSO), Kano state chapter, Ambassador Ibrahim Waiya has stated that the administration of the former President Muhammadu Buhari was responsible for the fuel subsidy removal before leaving office on May 29 this year, and not the current administration of President Tinubu.
Waiya stated this on Monday when the Association of Kano State Online Journalists(AKSO) paid a courtesy visit to his office in the state.
According to him, the immediate government of President Bihari ‘technically’ removed the fuel subsidy by not making provision for it in the 2023 fiscal budget from July to December.

When quizzed if the Kano CSOs will be joining tomorrow proposed strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Waiya emphatically noted that there was no such plan in the offing, adding that there are more other ways, such as dialogue to resolve issues amicably with the government without necessarily resorting to protest or industrial action.
He then praised President Tinubu’s decision to remove fuel subsidy, questioning why would some very few individuals be holding over two hundred million other to economic ransom in the name of subsidy.
“From what I learnt, over 1.9 trillion naira was discovered from subsidy within the last one month.
“If you divide 1.9 trillion naira for 36 states, do you how much each state will be realizing?
“Before the end of the year, who says we can’t realize up to 10 trillion naira? This is the money that was initially hijacked by some very few people”, he said.
He however enjoined the federal government to put in place the necessary measure to cushion the harsh effect of subsidy removal, ad he also warned Nigerians that it is no longer ‘business’ as usual.
