The appointment of Mr. Zaccheus as the new Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) marks a new chapter for Nigeria’s tax administration. He steps into the shoes of the outgoing Chairman, Muhammad Nami, who has left behind a remarkable legacy of achieving unprecedented tax revenue targets. During his tenure, Muhammad Nami propelled the FIRS to new heights, surpassing tax revenue targets year after year. His strategic leadership and commitment to improving tax collection in Nigeria resulted in an impressive 97.5% achievement of the 2020 target, followed by a perfect 100% performance in 2021. Moreover, he set an ambitious target of ₦10.38 trillion for 2022, which was almost achieved at 98%, with a total collection of ₦10.18 trillion. These achievements demonstrate not only the effectiveness of his strategies but also the immense potential for generating increased revenue through proper tax administration.
With Mr. Zaccheus now at the helm of the FIRS, there is a renewed sense of optimism for further progress and improvement. His appointment signals a commitment to continuity and building upon the successes of the past. Having served as the Coordinating Director, Domestic Taxes Group, his experience and expertise make him well-equipped to navigate the challenges involved in tax collection and further strengthen revenue generation.
