Victory for the People, By Mahmud Shuaibu Ringim
The landmark Supreme Court judgment affirming Abba Kabir Yusuf as the duly elected Governor of Kano State marks a significant milestone in upholding the judiciary’s independence from executive influence.
Governor Yusuf’s press briefing following the Supreme Court decision, where he acknowledged the support of President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shatima, highlights attempts by some power brokers to influence the judicial process in favor of the ruling party—an effort thwarted by the judiciary’s impartiality.
This ruling solidifies the judiciary’s commitment to dispensing justice based on constitutional principles and legal precedence, reinforcing Nigeria’s democratic foundations since 1999.
The unanimous decision by the five Supreme Court Justices underscores their disagreement with lower courts’ judgments, emphasizing the judiciary’s autonomy and responsibility to rectify legal errors.
Historical instances, like Amaechi vs. Omehia and Ozudinma vs. APC, showcase the Supreme Court’s ability to overturn lower court decisions, exemplifying its dedication to factual and lawful determinations.
