VIDEO: Disaster Averted as KNSFS Curtails Fire Outbreak at Kano Transmission Station
POLITICS DIGEST – The swift response of the Kano State Fire Service, KNSFS, has prevented a fire accident from a Transformer in a Transmission Station at the Dan Agundi area of the State from razing the stations control room and other sections of the power base.
The fire which reportedly started around 10:30pm on Monday, occurred after a loud bang was heard from the Transformer according to eyewitness account.
The fire consumed the Transformer for almost thirty minuites, however, men of the Kano State Fire Service were promptly on ground and it was successfully extinguished around 11:00am.
The cause of the fire cannot be specifically ascertained as Arewa Agenda was informed by officials who would not like to be mentioned that an inquiry had to be set up in order to investigate possible cause and extent of damage.
An anonymous source revealed that the fire may have started as a result of cable failure due to moisture content from yesterday’s heavy rainfall. “Naturally, if moisture enters cable, it’s bound to fail.” The source said.

Another source believes that the fire may have been triggered due to heavy load on the transformer but yet another source countered this claim, insisting that the transformer is programmed to shut down automatically if it bears load beyond its capacity.
Moreover, Arewa Agenda gathered that the fire extinguishers on ground were inadequate hence the inability of the men on ground to put it out immediately the fire started but a safety official who preferred anonymity countered the claim, stating that the transformer was already leaking oil before the outbreak so it aided the fire, otherwise a 150kg fire extinguisher alone would have been enough to contain the fire at its early stage.
Speaking on the incident, Hussaini Muhammad Ibrahim of the Kano State Fire Service confirmed that his men were successfully able to contain the fire and are currently trying to ascertain the reason and extent of damage on the transformer.
Also reacting, the Head of Corporate Communication, Kano Electricity Distribution Company, Sani Ibrahim Shawai confirmed the incidence in a press release. He however called on customers to be calm as there is no cause for alarm assuring that KEDCO management are already taking necessary steps to address the challenge.
The affected transformer feeds Zoo Road, Kofar Na’isa, Kofar Nasarawa, Gandun Albasa, Yan Kifi and Ibrahim Taiwo Road with electricity and these areas will be affected as a result of the incidence.
“Our teams are now on ground to assess the cause and damage, while work is currently ongoing to isolate the transformer for a comprehensive test for quick and full service restoration to the affected feeders.
We regret any inconveniences this may cause our teeming customers, while calling for their understanding.” Mr. Shawai said.
