While 23 Other APC Presidential Aspirants Screened Agreed, 1 Rejected Consensus – Oyegun
By Kabir Akintayo,
A former Governor of Edo State, Mr. John Oyegun, who led the Presidential Screening Committee of the All Progressives Congress, APC, said that out of the 24 aspirants screened, only one of the them rejected the idea of using consensus to pick the party’s presidential flagbearer for the 2023 general elections.
Oyegun, said that their Committee screened out 10 of the aspirants, following the guidelines released by the party, while 13 were certified ‘good to go’ for next week’s presidential convention of the governing party.
He said that their Committee wanted to slim down the list, but decided to allow others, who are mostly youths to exercise their franchise.

Oyegun, spoke while handing over their Screening Committee report to the APC National chairman, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, at the party’s secretariat in Abuja on Friday.
He said: “One thing I have to emphasize is; we engaged every aspirant on the issue of consensus, and it was a pleasant surprise that 99 percent agreed that the party is supreme, and whatever the party finally decides, with proper consultation, they were likely to accept.
“There is only one person that said I will accept consensus as long as it is based on me. So, I think it is a point I need to emphasize on. This will guide you in the hours ahead to trim down even more drastically. But finally we think we should not be afraid of the contested primary if anybody insist on the contest”.
In his remarks, Sen. Adamu, commended the Oyegun-led Committee for a job well done, noting that the participation of youths in the APC presidential race is a ‘plus’ for the party.
“We feel encouraged as a party that young people and young women have offered themselves to contest for the position of Nigeria’s president under the APC,” he said.
