Wike and VAT collection, by Adnan Mukhtar
Former governor Nyesom Wike who dragged FG to court over VAT collection has recently lambasted the supreme court of being “lethargic” in hearing the suit on the collection of value-added tax (VAT) between his state and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS)
The FG and some state governments are embroiled in a legal tussle over VAT collection.
Rivers and Lagos states government have enacted laws and called for decentralisation of collection while some states wants centralised collection.

The states at the forefront of this tussle are Lagos and Rivers.
Rivers was then under Nyesom Wike who is currently about to be sworn in as a minister in the Bola Tinubu’s administration and Lagos is under Babajide Sanwo-Olu, a godson of the President.
Mr. Wike, now a nominated Minister to serve under President Tinubu, had a case with the Supreme Court regarding VAT, making him an interested party in the matter. To avoid any undue influence on the matter before the court, I am of the opinion that his nomination should be put on hold pending the court’s judgment.
