2023: Wrongful Implementation of Naira Swap won’t Stop Tinubu’s Victory – Abdullahi Adamu
By Abdulrahman Abdulraheem
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Abdullahi Adamu, has criticised the timing of the implementation of the naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), saying it has exposed Nigerian masses to avoidable suffering and put everyone under pressure.
He however said the party’s presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, would defy the odds to emerge President-elect after Saturday’s polls, adding that Nigerians won’t desert the party because of the ongoing cash crunch.
Adamu who spoke while fielding questions from political editors in Abuja on Wednesday night, said that both him and his party do not have anything against the policy in principle, saying the CBN decision is for the good of the country.
He however criticised the fact that the ruling party was not consulted before the policy was implemented at a bad time for everybody.
He however sympathised with Nigerians who are enduring hard times, urging them to be patient since no leader would want to deliberately impose hardship on them.
“We sympathised with Nigerians. Everybody is looking for money now and we understand how difficult it is. I wish the implementation of the policy is not happening now. The timing is an issue. But no leader would want to deliberately impose pain on the people.
“We are not opposed to the policy. I am personally not opposed to it in principle. But the implementation has posed challenges.
“The pessimists will see us lose on Saturday. But we will win. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu will win on Saturday since Nigerians have not lost faith in us. They won’t lose hope in us at all. Nigerians are still with us. The naira crisis won’t affect our victory,” the chairman said.

Adamu also exonerated the governors who took the federal government to Supreme Court over the implementation of the policy, saying while the party remains united, the governors were merely reacting to the pressure they were getting from their people.
On the alleged division in the party, he said: “We are united. No governor will work against the party or himself. They were only carried away with the pressure from their people and there is
nothing wrong with identifying with the pain and plight of their people.”
Answering a question on Tinubu’s age, health and suitability for office, Adam said: “He is as fit as fiddle. I am not aware of any ill health around him and I don’t know how close you are to him. I an very close to him. We had a very gruelling campaign and there was never a time he complained or said he can’t do this or that. He is very strong and healthy. He is up to the task. What some of us go through in terms of physical and mental work at our age, many of you can’t withstand it. He will run a robust presidency, nothing like proxy presidency. He is not the type of man that will surrender his authority to anybody.
“Tinubu is ten years younger than Joe Biden, yet the latter is doing well with all the complications involved in leading America. Why can’t we give Tinubu a chance here? I worked with Tinubu as governors and in this positions for the past in the last 9 months and I can attest to his capacity, depth and understanding of deep government issue.
Adamu noted that there is nothing like a cabal or mafia in the Villa, saying those who made the allegations only do so when they want something and cannot get it.
“I don’t belong to the Mafia world. it takes a Mafia man to identify a Mafia gang. The talk of cabal is imaginary. We have no Mafia anywhere. I have been with Tinubu and he is not aware of any. When people don’t get what they want, they begin to blame an imaginary cabal,” he argued.
“We are working to win. Go home with the message and tell everybody. We will win. Tinubu is bringing renewed hope to build on Buhari’s legacy. He will also open new opportunities for more,” an enthusiastic Adamu added.
