X-raying Kashim Shettima’s Recent Remarks About Black Man
By AbdurRaheem Sa’ad Dembo
I watched a video online recently where Vice President Kashim Shettima referred to Lawmakers (Nigerians) as the representatives of black man. This is what he said:
“We are the representatives of the black man and that is the burden we all carry. If Nigeria fails, the black man has failed.Let us make Nigeria works”. He made the statement in Ekot Ekpene while declaring open a two-day retreat for the National Assembly leaders on Friday, 22nd September, 2023.
I’m glad the Vice President has nailed it absolutely that if Nigeria fails, the black man has invariably failed. No doubt about the fact that Nigeria is the most populous black nation on earth, so one may say his statement is definitely not unconnected to that.
Nigeria has a population of about 200 million with human and material resources, yet we have not harnessed her full potentials. Of course the Vice President’s statement is assuring and reliable but the reality of the matter is that our challenges won’t be addressed by mere rhetorics and captivating words; we must swing into action with all seriousness and commitment to get Nigeria on track.
You may not be far from the truth if you tag me as a fan of Kashim Shettima because of his intelligence, political sagacity, eloquence and pragmatic dispositions. The truth is, if you are knowledgeable you would appreciate His Excellency’s intelligent disposition. If he is addressing an audience you would have to listen to him attentively, because he is firm, focused and diplomatic almost all the time.

A man does not just develop an affection to a personality or a leader, there must be something unique and worthy of emulation in that individual. Like Turaki of Ilorin, Senator Saliu Mustapha who is an all time generous politician; if you like helping the downtrodden in the society you would love Senator Mustapha, but if you are a stingy figure you would look away.
More importantly, another salient point he made was substantiating how ephemeral the position of power could be, saying that one would spend longer years out of power. According to him “we are going to spend more years outside power than in power . Power, to me, is a humbling experience. Power should be used for the good of the people”.
This is an indication that Kashim Shettima’s conscience works like a clock without a fault. Only a leader with great conscience would affirm that power is transient. If our leaders constantly remind themselves about this then they will be doing the right thing. We are human beings and forgetfulness is a natural trait.
The vice president equally admonished the leaders of the 10th National Assembly to embrace divergent views and work for the sustenance of Nigeria’s democracy. He emphasized on why leaders should remain humble and united in serving the people.
He also said power should be used for the good of the people. This is apt, because any power that is being used to oppress or suppress others has no justification. He explained that Nigeria is a blessed country with great hope and that political power is a gift from God.
It is significant to say that His Excellency Kashim Shettima said a lot of things at the retreat for the National Assembly leaders, but I have only dwelled on my area of interest which is about the black man, transient nature of power and good leadership.
It would not be out of place if one is emphatic on the fact that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is blessed with a vice president who will assist his administration to achieve immense progress due to the Kanuri man’s commitment, intelligence and loyalty.
