Nigeria’s youth, defined as those between the ages of 18 and 35, make up more than 60% of the population. This demographic is an influential force capable of shaping the nation’s political future. Historically, Nigerian politics has been dominated by older generations, but a change is underway as young people increasingly step into political roles.
Several factors have contributed to the growing prominence of youth in Nigerian politics. One of the most significant is the widespread use of social media, which has allowed young people to connect, organize, and demand accountability from their leaders. The #EndSARS movement, which protested police brutality, demonstrated the power of youth-driven activism and its ability to effect change.
The passing of the Not Too Young To Run Act in 2018 also played a crucial role in this political evolution. By lowering the age requirements for elective offices, the Act opened the door for more young Nigerians to participate in governance, challenging the long-standing norm of gerontocratic leadership.

Despite these advances, young aspirants in Nigerian politics still face numerous challenges. These include a lack of political education, the influence of patronage politics, and widespread corruption. Such obstacles can deter idealistic young people from pursuing political careers.
However, the resilience and optimism of Nigerian youth have enabled them to continue pushing forward, undeterred by these barriers. Prominent young leaders are already making their mark. For example, Bello Shagari, popularly known as Belshagy from Sokoto State, has utilized social media to reach a wider audience and advocate for policies that reflect the needs of his generation.
Youth leaders like him are championing transparency, accountability, and progressive governance. Through their efforts, improvements have been seen in sectors such as education, healthcare, and economic empowerment.
The increased participation of young people in Nigerian politics is a positive development for the nation. Around the world, youth leadership has brought about fresh perspectives and innovative solutions. In Nigeria, young leaders have the potential to address critical challenges such as unemployment, poverty, security, and infrastructure development.
The rise of youth leadership is a clear indication of the potential for a new era in Nigerian governance. Their energy, passion, and commitment to better governance position them as ideal candidates to transform the country. As they work to dismantle oppressive systems and challenge the status quo, the vision of a more equitable and forward-looking Nigeria becomes increasingly achievable.
