Zulum Vows to Prosecute Ghost Workers on Borno LGs Payroll
POLITICS DIGEST – Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, has promised to prosecute and punish any ghost worker on the payroll of the local government councils in the state.
The governor stated that his administration will not spare any ghost worker found on the payroll of the local government, no matter how highly placed the culprit is.
He explained that, “Local governments are to bring development to the grassroots. We will not tolerate a situation where only few will consume the money meant for majority at the detriment of majority.”
Zulum, handed down the warning when he paid a homage on the Emir of Askira, Alhaji Abdullahi Muhammadu Askira ain Askura, the headquarter of Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State on Thursday.

He said, “Each month, we spend N90 million on payment of workers salary who constitutes less than one per cent of the population of the local government, leaving education. Health. infrastructure, water supply too suffer. We will not allow this to continue. We are carrying out verification exercise in the local government. I urge you to cooperate with the committee.”
“I receive an email from somebody that Askira Uba is the most corrupt local government area in the state and that the workers of the local government are contributing N1,000 to bribe the verification team. We are going punish anybody found wanting”,” the governor added.
He said: ” For any meaningful development to take place at the local government level, we have to get rid of ghost workers on the payroll of the local government. Our local government areas need to be functional, so as to bring the needed development to the people. ”
The governor added: “I don’t care about second term. We have sanitize our local government system and we need the cooperation of the traditional institution and all of you to do that. You can see even the emirate council is suffering as a result of paucity of funds.”
Earlier, the Emir, Abdullshi Ismaila Mamza, said: “We the people of Askira lack word to convey our appreciation to your administration. Within the six months in office, you visited Askira Uba twice and you have done a lot to the people of Askira that even surpasses what other governors did in eight years.”
