2023: The insistence of Kwankwaso and the odds against a favoured candidate, by Sani Yusuf Salihu
POLITICS DIGEST– History is what should teach mankind lessons and circumstances repeat themselves, when the pursuit for self centred interest overrides collective stance failure abounds.
Kano as one bedrock of political sagacity have witnessed happenings that reminds any person willing person to reason the consequences of overlooking the popular will. In recent years it can be recalled how handpicking a successor cost Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau and his party the prestigious seat after 50,000 votes from a once loyal deputy spoilt the anticipated success.
As we inch towards the 2023 general elections, one question that continues to beg for answer within the Kwankwasiyya movement, the group that controls the block majority of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano, is about the ‘who should be candidate’ of the party in the next gubernatorial elections coming up in 2023, who will be the right person to wriggle the state to the PDP from the present grip of the APC led government of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
2019 came and went but not without some bitter lessons to be learnt especially for the PDP and Kwankwasiyya on what led to their avoidable defeat at the polls. One thing that is clear is the fact that the unity of the Kwankwasiyya group and even that of other power blocks within the party will be very instrumental for a way forward, and any slight division within the ranks of the party’s stakeholders will be inimical to the success of the party.

Engineer Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya should at best and as the leader of all, that he is expected to be, allow for a level playing ground process that will decide who picks the ticket of the party in Kano, the insistence of re introducing and imposing the lacklustre Abba Kabir Yusuf is unhealthy, undemocratic and will not augur well for the party, history notes that Abba Kabir Yusuf does not have the necessary political clout, charisma, network, financial war chest and mobilization ability to challenge the power backed candidate the APC will field who may enjoy the incumbency factor of the outgoing governor and the national might as well.Kwankwasiyya his aspiration to the a pseudo- third term agenda of Dr. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso who is still being wittle down by his fast established track record of disrespect and high-handedness on dealing with the Kano elders. This problem however is evident on how the state elders turn their backs on the PDP and Kwankwasiyya at the very point of need despite some of the injustices observed during the 2019 gubernatorial rerun elections in the State.
As things continue to unfold, one fundamental issue that will guarantee the victory and success of the Kwankwasiyya is in the fielding a candidate through consensus or a transparent democratic process as justice is the only panacea to avoid any foreseeable future crisis, the need to unite the house and carry everybody along in decision making is even greater and the need to salvage the Kano State people from the APC maladministration is also a greater point of interest.
Rooms should be created for wider consultations, internal debacles should be properly looked into and be address as appropriate while all manners of favouritism and brazen show of preference should be abolished henceforth.
