2027: Basiru Urges Ex-Assembly Speakers to Mobilise Support for Tinubu
POLITICS DIGEST— The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has urged former presiding officers of State Houses of Assembly across Nigeria to mobilise grassroots support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 and defend the gains of his administration’s reforms.
Basiru made the call at a programme organised by the Kaduna State Chapter of the Former Presiding Officers of State Houses of Assembly in Nigeria, themed “Kaduna 2026: United Voices of Experience, All Together for Tinubu 2027.”
He said the former legislative leaders, given their political experience, electoral backgrounds and grassroots influence, were strategically positioned to educate Nigerians on the rationale behind the administration’s economic policies and counter opposition narratives.
The APC national secretary noted that Tinubu inherited severe fiscal challenges upon assuming office, necessitating difficult policy decisions, including the removal of petrol subsidies and the adoption of a market-driven foreign exchange regime.
According to him, although the reforms initially imposed difficulties on Nigerians, they had improved the financial capacity of state governments to meet salary and pension obligations and invest in developmental projects.

Basiru described the improved fiscal position of many state governments as a significant development in public finance management, urging political stakeholders to explain the objectives and long-term benefits of the reforms to Nigerians.
He also challenged opposition leaders who had previously occupied influential government positions to account for their records in office before presenting themselves as credible alternatives to the Tinubu administration.
The APC chieftain specifically questioned the economic prescriptions of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, citing his participation in previous administrations, including the controversial privatisation and sale of national assets.
He cautioned Nigerians against what he described as unrealistic promises and politically motivated narratives by opposition figures seeking electoral advantage ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Basiru urged the former presiding officers to intensify public enlightenment, engage communities nationwide and encourage voters to assess political parties and candidates based on verifiable records, policy direction and performance.
He stressed that sustained mobilisation, strategic communication and unity among party stakeholders would be crucial to the APC’s electoral prospects, urging party faithful to take the administration’s message to the grassroots and rally support for Tinubu’s re-election.
