2027: ‘You Can’t Fight Tinubu Alone, Opposition Must Unite’ — Donald Duke

Former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, has urged opposition politicians in Nigeria to unite and present a common front ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that individually confronting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could weaken their chances.
Duke made the remarks while speaking in an interview, where he assessed the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to him, the current political structure is heavily tilted in favour of the incumbent, making it difficult for individual opposition contenders to effectively challenge Tinubu.

“Everything is skewed in favour of the incumbent. The only way you can tackle the incumbent is to come together to have a voice; otherwise, you’ll be factionalised. Bola Tinubu is not the average politician.
You don’t go to fight a lion who also has horns. Can you imagine a lion with a horn? It’s already a dangerous animal, and you say, ‘go and fight it with a knife and fork!” Duke said.
The former governor described President Tinubu as an experienced and formidable politician who should not be underestimated in the race for the presidency.
Duke likened the task of challenging the President to confronting a dangerous animal, stressing that opposition politicians would need a collective strategy rather than attempting to take on the incumbent individually.
“Bola Tinubu is not the average politician. You don’t go to fight a lion who also has horns. Can you imagine a lion with a horn? It’s already a dangerous animal, and you say, ‘go and fight it with a knife and fork,’” he said.
His comments come amid growing political realignments and discussions among opposition parties and politicians ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Duke’s position suggests that a united opposition platform could be crucial if opposition politicians hope to mount a serious challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu in 2027.
