‘Delusion of Grandeur’: Shettima Mocks Obi Over 2023 Victory Claim
POLITICS DIGEST – Vice President Kashim Shettima has dismissed Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi’s claim that he won the election, describing it as a “delusion of grandeur”.
Shettima made the remarks on Wednesday during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The Vice President questioned Obi’s evidence for claiming victory in the election, accusing him of making unsubstantiated assertions.
“I respect Peter Obi, but he has gone beyond his mastery of philosophy to make bogus claims about winning the 2023 presidential election without producing evidence to buttress his assertion. This is called delusion of grandeur,” Shettima said.
He also criticised Obi’s economic proposals, describing them as disconnected from Nigeria’s realities and overly reliant on comparisons with other countries.

Shettima likened Obi’s approach to attempting to fit a shirt designed for one country onto another with different needs and circumstances.
“Then comes my very good friend, Mr Peter Obi, the master of bogus statistics and incoherent economic prescriptions who seems convinced that his size 36 shirt for Bangladesh will somehow fit Nigeria’s size 52,” he said.
The Vice President argued that effective governance required an understanding of a country’s unique social, economic and political circumstances.
He added that Nigeria, with a population of more than 200 million people, could not be governed using borrowed statistics and policies developed without considering its peculiar challenges.
“A country of over 200 million people cannot be governed through borrowed statistics and economic prescriptions detached from its peculiarities,” Shettima said.
The remarks came as the ruling APC inaugurated its expanded presidential campaign council ahead of the 2027 general election.
Obi, who finished third in the 2023 presidential election, has repeatedly maintained that he won the poll, while the APC and the Presidency have challenged him to provide evidence to support his claim.
